Peyush Bansal is an Indian entrepreneur, business executive and investor best known as the co-founder, Chairman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lenskart, an eyewear company operating across India and international markets. He is also widely recognized for his role as an investor on the Indian business reality television program Shark Tank India. Bansal has been associated with the development of technology-driven and omnichannel approaches to eyewear retail in India.

Early life and education

Bansal was born in New Delhi, India. He later moved to Canada for higher education and studied electrical engineering at McGill University in Montreal. His engineering background contributed to his interest in technology and product development.

After completing his university education, Bansal began his professional career in the technology industry in the United States. He joined Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, where he worked as a program manager on the company's Microsoft Office team.

His experience at Microsoft exposed him to large-scale technology products and consumer-focused product development. He subsequently decided to leave Microsoft and return to India to pursue entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurial career

After returning to India in 2007, Bansal began developing technology businesses aimed at solving consumer problems. One of his early ventures was SearchMyCampus.com, an online platform focused on helping students find accommodation and other opportunities.

Bansal later established Valyoo Technologies, a company that became the corporate foundation for several online businesses. The company explored different consumer categories before focusing primarily on eyewear.

Bansal's interest in eyewear developed after studying the accessibility and affordability problems associated with prescription glasses. He spent time understanding the traditional optical-retail industry and identified opportunities to use technology, direct-to-consumer distribution and manufacturing to make eyewear more accessible.

Lenskart

In 2008, Bansal co-founded Valyoo Technologies with Neha Bansal, Amit Chaudhary and Sumeet Kapahi. The company subsequently launched Lenskart as an online eyewear business in India in 2010. According to Lenskart, the company initially operated online before opening its first physical retail store in New Delhi in 2013.[1]

Lenskart's business model combined online commerce with physical optical stores. The company expanded its services to include prescription eyewear, sunglasses, contact lenses and related products. Its approach also included technology-assisted eye testing, virtual product experiences and investments in manufacturing and supply-chain infrastructure.

Under Bansal's leadership, Lenskart expanded beyond its original online model and developed an omnichannel retail network. The company subsequently expanded into international markets, including Japan, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.[2]

In 2022, Lenskart announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Japanese eyewear company Owndays. The transaction strengthened Lenskart's international presence and supported its strategy of building a global eyewear business.

Lenskart became a publicly listed company in 2025 through an initial public offering. Forbes reported that the IPO raised approximately US$821 million.[3]

As of 2026, Bansal serves as Chairman, Managing Director, CEO, Co-founder and Promoter of Lenskart.[4]

Business philosophy

Bansal's approach to entrepreneurship has emphasized identifying large consumer problems and using technology to develop scalable solutions. His work at Lenskart has focused on combining digital commerce, physical retail, manufacturing and technology rather than treating online and offline retail as separate businesses.

Forbes India has described Lenskart's development as an example of an Indian consumer technology company building a product-focused multinational business from India. The company has expanded its manufacturing capabilities and developed technology for areas such as supply-chain management, store-location analysis, computer vision and eye testing.[5]

Bansal has also emphasized affordability and accessibility in eyewear. His stated objective has been to address the large number of people who require vision correction but do not regularly use spectacles.

Shark Tank India

Bansal became widely known to a broader Indian television audience through Shark Tank India, where he appeared as one of the show's investors, commonly referred to as a "shark".

On the program, Bansal evaluates entrepreneurs and startup businesses, asking questions about their products, revenue, business models, valuations and growth strategies. His appearances on the show have contributed to his public profile as a technology entrepreneur and investor.

His participation in Shark Tank India has also connected his career with India's expanding startup and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Investments and entrepreneurship

Beyond Lenskart, Bansal has been associated with investments in and mentorship of emerging businesses. Through his activities as an investor and television personality, he has participated in discussions around entrepreneurship, product development, customer acquisition and business strategy.

His career is frequently cited as an example of an entrepreneur who transitioned from a technology role at a major multinational company into building an Indian consumer technology company.

Legacy and recognition

Bansal is recognized for helping transform the Indian eyewear-retail sector through Lenskart's combination of e-commerce, physical stores, technology and vertically integrated operations. The company has expanded from an online eyewear retailer into an international consumer brand with operations across multiple markets.

Forbes reported in 2026 that Lenskart's expansion and public listing had significantly increased the value of Bansal's stake in the company, making him one of India's prominent technology and consumer-business entrepreneurs.[6]

His career combines experience in software and product management, entrepreneurship, consumer retail, technology-enabled commerce and startup investing. Through Lenskart and his public role on Shark Tank India, Bansal has become a recognizable figure in India's modern startup ecosystem.
