Nithin Kamath (born 5 October 1979) is an Indian entrepreneur, investor and stockbroker best known as the founder and chief executive officer of Zerodha, a financial services company based in Bengaluru. He co-founded the company with his younger brother Nikhil Kamath in 2010 after spending more than a decade trading in the financial markets. Zerodha was created around the idea of reducing the cost and complexity associated with traditional stockbroking in India.

Early life

Nithin Kamath was born on 5 October 1979 in Shimoga, Karnataka. He grew up in a Konkani family and later moved with his family to Bengaluru. His early exposure to financial markets came during his teenage years, when he began trading stocks at the age of 17.

Rather than beginning his career in a conventional corporate finance role, Kamath gained practical experience through years of trading. His early experiences with the stock market included both profitable periods and significant losses, which later influenced his thinking about risk, trading costs and the needs of individual investors.

Education

Kamath studied engineering at the Bangalore Institute of Technology in Bengaluru. His professional development, however, was closely connected to his practical experience in financial markets.

During his early years as a trader, he also worked at a call centre to support himself financially while continuing to trade. He later worked as a sub-broker and financial adviser, experiences that exposed him to the operations of traditional brokerage businesses and the requirements of retail clients.

Beginning of trading career

Kamath began trading in the stock market at 17. He spent several years developing his skills as a proprietary trader while studying and working.

In the early 2000s, he worked night shifts at a call centre while trading during the day. The arrangement allowed him to continue participating in the financial markets while maintaining another source of income.

By 2004, Kamath had established Kamath Associates, a financial advisory and sub-broking business. His work brought him into direct contact with retail investors and helped him understand the limitations of conventional brokerage services.

His experience eventually led him to identify a gap between the increasingly online behavior of traders and the traditional, branch-based structure of many brokerage firms.

Founding of Zerodha

In 2010, Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath founded Zerodha. The name combines the words "zero" and the Sanskrit term "rodha", meaning barrier.

The company's original concept was to operate primarily online, reduce unnecessary costs and provide technology-driven access to financial markets. Kamath's own experience as a trader influenced the company's focus on trading costs, technology and customer support.

Zerodha was bootstrapped rather than built around traditional venture-capital financing. Its business model centered on online services and a simplified brokerage structure. The company subsequently became one of India's largest retail brokerage businesses.

Zerodha and online brokerage

Zerodha helped popularize discount brokerage in India's retail investment market. Its technology platforms allowed customers to place trades and manage investments online rather than relying on physical branches or traditional relationship managers.

The company developed products for different aspects of investing and trading, including its trading platform Kite and educational platform Zerodha Varsity.

The growth of online investing, increased smartphone adoption and the expansion of India's retail participation in financial markets contributed to the wider adoption of digital brokerage platforms.

Kamath's role has included both business leadership and product-oriented decision making as Zerodha expanded its technology infrastructure and financial services ecosystem.

Rainmatter

Nithin Kamath is also associated with Rainmatter, Zerodha's fintech-focused investment initiative. Rainmatter was established to support startups working in financial technology and related areas.

The initiative has invested in companies and projects intended to develop products and services around financial markets, investing and financial inclusion.

Rainmatter became an important part of the broader ecosystem built around Zerodha, extending Kamath's activities beyond operating a brokerage company into startup investing and support.

Financial education

Kamath has also supported financial education through Zerodha's educational initiatives. Zerodha Varsity provides educational material covering subjects such as stock markets, technical analysis, fundamental analysis, options, futures, personal finance and risk management.

The initiative reflects Zerodha's broader approach of combining brokerage services with freely accessible educational resources.

Kamath has frequently discussed the importance of understanding financial products and risks rather than approaching markets purely as a way to make short-term profits.

Leadership and industry involvement

As Zerodha's founder and CEO, Kamath has remained involved in the company's strategic direction and its technology-focused approach to financial services.

Zerodha's official company profile identifies him as its founder and CEO and notes his membership in the SEBI Secondary Market Advisory Committee (SMAC) and Market Data Advisory Committee (MDAC).

His industry involvement has included discussions around market structure, retail participation, technology, taxation, financial regulation and investor behavior.

Investment activities

Beyond Zerodha, Kamath has participated in investment and entrepreneurial activities through initiatives connected with financial technology and wealth management.

He and Nikhil Kamath are associated with True Beacon, an investment management business serving high-net-worth investors. Their broader business activities have contributed to the development of a group of financial and investment-related ventures.

Forbes identifies the Kamath brothers' primary source of wealth as financial services and describes Zerodha as a major Indian brokerage founded by the brothers in 2010.

Approach to business

Kamath's business philosophy has frequently emphasized controlling costs, building technology internally and maintaining a long-term focus rather than relying heavily on conventional advertising.

Zerodha's early growth was driven largely by word of mouth and its online-first model. The company's approach differed from traditional brokerages that depended extensively on physical branches and relationship-based distribution.

His experience as a trader also influenced Zerodha's emphasis on building products around the actual workflow of market participants.

Recognition

Nithin Kamath has received recognition for his work in entrepreneurship and financial services. His professional achievements have included the CII Emerging Entrepreneur Award and recognition from business publications for his contribution to India's startup ecosystem.

In 2016, The Economic Times included Kamath among Indian businessmen to watch, reflecting the growing prominence of Zerodha in India's financial technology sector.

Public profile

Kamath has developed a substantial public presence through interviews, articles and social-media discussions about investing, entrepreneurship, technology and financial markets.

His public commentary frequently focuses on practical aspects of building businesses, the economics of brokerage services, market participation and the risks faced by retail investors.

Zerodha also publishes interviews and educational material featuring Kamath through its own media and educational platforms.

Personal life

Nithin Kamath is married to Seema Patil, who has also been associated with Zerodha. His younger brother Nikhil Kamath is his co-founder and business partner.

The Kamath brothers' collaboration at Zerodha has become a notable example of a family-founded financial technology business that grew without following the conventional venture-funded startup model.

Legacy

Nithin Kamath is associated with the expansion of technology-driven retail investing in India. Through Zerodha, he helped establish a brokerage model centered on online access, lower transaction costs and self-directed investing.

His career combines experience as a trader with entrepreneurship, technology-led financial services and startup investing. Zerodha's development, along with initiatives such as Rainmatter and Varsity, has made Kamath a prominent figure in India's fintech ecosystem.
