Brian Chesky (born 29 August 1981) is an American entrepreneur, designer and business executive. He is the co-founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Airbnb, a global platform connecting travelers with hosts offering stays, experiences and services.

Chesky co-founded Airbnb with Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk in 2007. What began as a small attempt to provide accommodation to visitors in San Francisco developed into one of the world's largest travel platforms. Airbnb currently operates across more than 220 countries and regions and has millions of hosts and listings worldwide.[1]

Unlike many technology-company founders with primarily engineering backgrounds, Chesky trained as a designer. His design education has remained an important part of his approach to product development, company culture and the relationship between hosts and guests.

Early life

Brian Chesky was born on 29 August 1981 in Niskayuna, New York, United States. He grew up in a family with an interest in the arts and developed an early interest in design.

Chesky studied at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he graduated with a degree in industrial design. His education at RISD later influenced the way he approached the development of Airbnb's user experience and brand identity.[2]

After university, Chesky worked as an industrial designer. He later moved to San Francisco, where he lived with fellow designer Joe Gebbia.

The idea behind Airbnb

The origins of Airbnb can be traced to 2007, when San Francisco was hosting a major design conference and hotel rooms were difficult to find.

Chesky and Gebbia decided to rent out space in their apartment to visitors. They provided air mattresses and breakfast, creating the concept that eventually became Airbed & Breakfast.

The first guests stayed with Chesky and Gebbia in October 2007. Nathan Blecharczyk, a former roommate of Gebbia and a technology engineer, subsequently joined the venture as a co-founder.[3]

The original concept was considerably smaller than the global platform that Airbnb later became. The founders were initially attempting to solve a local accommodation problem rather than build a worldwide hospitality company.

Building Airbnb

Airbed & Breakfast officially launched in 2008. The company initially allowed people to offer spare rooms and sleeping spaces to travelers.

The founders encountered significant challenges during the early stages of the business. They experimented with different approaches to attracting hosts and guests and eventually focused on improving the quality of listings and photographs.

The company also developed its own payments infrastructure, allowing transactions between hosts and guests to take place through the platform.[4]

In 2009, the company shortened its name from Airbed & Breakfast to Airbnb and expanded beyond air mattresses and shared rooms to include apartments, homes and other forms of accommodation.

This expansion changed the potential market for the business and allowed Airbnb to compete more directly with traditional lodging businesses.

Design-led product development

Chesky's background in industrial design has influenced Airbnb's approach to product development.

Rather than treating Airbnb solely as a booking website, Chesky has emphasized the overall experience of discovering a property, communicating with hosts, completing reservations and staying in unfamiliar places.

Airbnb's leadership describes this design-driven approach as an important part of creating trust between people who may not know each other.[5]

This philosophy has also influenced Airbnb's visual identity, product interfaces, photography standards and community-focused features.

Expansion of Airbnb

During the 2010s, Airbnb expanded rapidly into international markets.

The company opened offices in major cities and developed a global network of hosts. Its services expanded from accommodation into categories such as experiences and other travel-related offerings.

Airbnb also introduced programs intended to address emergency accommodation and community needs. These initiatives included Open Homes, which provided temporary accommodation for people affected by disasters and other emergencies.[6]

The platform's growth eventually created a marketplace operating across hundreds of countries and regions.

Leadership during the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic created a major disruption for the global travel industry in 2020. Airbnb experienced a sharp decline in travel demand and undertook significant changes to its operations.

The company reduced costs, adjusted its business priorities and increased its focus on long-term financial sustainability.

Airbnb subsequently completed its initial public offering on the Nasdaq in December 2020. The listing became a major milestone in the company's development as a publicly traded technology and travel company.

Airbnb's evolution

Under Chesky's leadership, Airbnb has continued to broaden the services available through its platform.

The company currently describes itself as a marketplace offering stays, experiences and services. Its platform includes millions of active listings across more than 150,000 cities and towns.[7]

Airbnb reported that more than 2.5 billion guest arrivals had taken place through the platform by 2026. The company also reported more than 5.5 million hosts and more than nine million active listings worldwide.[8]

Chesky continues to set the company's overall vision and strategy as CEO.

Technology and artificial intelligence

Technology has remained central to Airbnb's business model.

The platform uses software for search, recommendations, payments, identity verification, fraud prevention, customer support and marketplace operations.

In recent years, Chesky has also emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in improving Airbnb's products and internal operations. Airbnb's 2025 financial reporting highlighted AI as one of the areas being developed alongside the company's core travel business.[9]

Airbnb in India

India has become an important market for Airbnb. According to an Airbnb and Oxford Economics report, domestic travelers represented approximately 91 percent of Airbnb guests in India in 2024.

The same report stated that Airbnb guests spent approximately INR 112 billion on accommodation and non-accommodation expenses in India during 2024.[10]

Chesky has described India as a long-term market for Airbnb and has participated in discussions about the company's expansion and opportunities in the country.

Philanthropy

Chesky is a signatory to the Giving Pledge, a philanthropic initiative through which participating individuals commit to giving the majority of their wealth to charitable causes.

Airbnb states that Chesky has committed to donating the net proceeds from his CEO equity compensation to community, philanthropic and charitable causes.[11]

His philanthropic interests have included housing, community development and initiatives intended to support people affected by humanitarian crises.

Public profile

Chesky has become a prominent figure in the global technology and travel industries. His public appearances frequently focus on entrepreneurship, design, leadership and the development of Airbnb.

His background as a designer has remained a distinctive part of his professional identity. Airbnb's corporate materials specifically describe the influence of his design education on the company's culture, product and community.[12]

Current role

As of 2026, Chesky remains Airbnb's co-founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. He continues to oversee the company's overall vision and strategy while guiding its expansion into new travel-related products and technologies.[13]

Legacy

Brian Chesky's career is closely associated with the development of the peer-to-peer accommodation industry and the broader platform economy.

Airbnb transformed the original idea of renting spare space into a global marketplace connecting hosts and travelers. Chesky's design background, combined with the technical and business expertise of his co-founders, helped shape the company's product and community model.

His career also illustrates the transition of design skills into technology entrepreneurship, with product design becoming an important component of a global consumer platform.
