Falguni Nayar (born 19 February 1963) is an Indian entrepreneur, business executive and former investment banker. She is the founder, Executive Chairperson, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nykaa, one of India's major beauty and lifestyle retail companies. Nayar founded Nykaa in 2012 after a career spanning investment banking, financial services and corporate advisory.
Nayar is recognized for building Nykaa from a digital-first beauty retailer into an omnichannel company operating across beauty, fashion, lifestyle and business-to-business commerce. Her career has also made her one of the prominent women entrepreneurs in India's consumer and technology sectors.
Early life and education
Falguni Nayar was born on 19 February 1963 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She studied at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), where she completed a post-graduate diploma in management. Her management education provided a foundation for her subsequent career in investment banking and corporate finance.
Nayar began her professional career in consulting and investment banking before establishing herself in India's financial-services industry. Her early professional experience included work in management consulting and investment banking, where she developed expertise in corporate finance, capital markets and advising businesses.
Investment banking career
Before founding Nykaa, Nayar spent nearly two decades with the Kotak Mahindra Group. She was associated with Kotak Mahindra Capital Company and later served as its Managing Director. During this period, she worked with companies and entrepreneurs on capital-market transactions and public-market strategies.
Her investment-banking career gave her extensive experience with Indian businesses and financial markets. She was involved in advising companies preparing for stock-market listings and worked with business founders as they raised capital and expanded their operations.
Nayar also served on the boards of several companies during and after her investment-banking career. Her previous and current board associations have included companies such as Tata Motors, Aviva, Dabur India and Kotak Securities.
Founding Nykaa
In 2012, Nayar founded Nykaa with the objective of creating a specialized beauty-retail business in India. The company was established as a digital-first consumer technology platform and initially focused on selling beauty and personal-care products online.
At the time, India's organized beauty market was less developed than many other consumer categories. Nayar's strategy was to combine e-commerce with curated product selection, beauty education and an emphasis on authentic products.
Nykaa subsequently expanded from online retail into physical stores, creating an omnichannel business model. Its product portfolio grew to include cosmetics, skincare, haircare, fragrances, wellness products and fashion.
Growth of Nykaa
Under Nayar's leadership, Nykaa expanded into a broader beauty and lifestyle ecosystem. The company developed several businesses and platforms, including Nykaa Fashion and Nykaa Superstore, while also building a portfolio of owned consumer brands.
Nykaa's business model combines e-commerce, physical retail, content and consumer brands. The company has also invested in technology, logistics and supply-chain infrastructure to support its expanding customer base.
Nykaa's growth has been associated with the increasing adoption of online beauty shopping in India. The company has promoted product discovery through editorial content, tutorials, beauty communities and digital experiences alongside its retail operations.
The company later expanded internationally, including into the Middle East through its Nysaa platform. Nykaa's broader operations have also extended beyond beauty into fashion and business-to-business commerce.
Nykaa initial public offering
A major milestone in Nayar's career came in 2021 when Nykaa's parent company, FSN E-Commerce Ventures, completed its initial public offering on Indian stock exchanges.
According to Nykaa's corporate disclosures, the IPO was oversubscribed 82 times and raised approximately INR 53.5 billion. The listing made Nykaa one of India's prominent publicly traded consumer technology companies and established Nayar as a notable entrepreneur in the Indian public markets.
Nykaa's public listing was particularly notable because the company became a major woman-led Indian consumer technology business to reach the stock market. Nayar's transition from investment banker to founder and public-company leader became an example frequently discussed in India's entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Leadership at Nykaa
As Executive Chairperson, Managing Director and CEO, Nayar oversees the strategic direction of Nykaa and its businesses. The company's leadership structure includes its beauty e-commerce, fashion, retail, brand and business-to-business operations.
Nayar has emphasized customer experience, authenticity and access to a broad assortment of beauty and lifestyle products. Nykaa states that products sold through its platform are sourced from brands or authorized distributors as part of its authenticity policy.
Her leadership has also involved developing Nykaa's owned brands and expanding the company's physical retail presence. The business has evolved from its original online model into a combination of digital commerce, stores, content and consumer brands.
Recognition and awards
Nayar has received numerous business and entrepreneurship awards and recognitions.
In 2019, she received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year – Start-up award and was named Businesswoman of the Year at the Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence. She was also included among Forbes Asia's Asia's Power Businesswomen and was named Business Person of the Year by Vogue India.
In 2022, she received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award in India. She later received the Isidoro Alvarez Lifetime Achievement Medal at the World Retail Congress in 2023. She has also appeared on lists recognizing influential women in global business, including Forbes' rankings of powerful women.
Nayar was also inducted into Business Today's Hall of Fame following repeated recognition among India's most powerful women.
Personal life
Falguni Nayar is married to banker and private-equity executive Sanjay Nayar. They have two children, Anchit Nayar and Adwaita Nayar, who have also held leadership positions within the Nykaa group.
Adwaita Nayar is associated with Nykaa Fashion, while Anchit Nayar has held executive responsibilities in Nykaa's beauty e-commerce business.
Legacy
Falguni Nayar's career is notable for her transition from a senior investment-banking position to entrepreneurship later in her professional life. Through Nykaa, she helped establish a large organized digital and physical retail ecosystem for beauty products in India.
Her work combines experience in finance, technology-enabled commerce, consumer retail and brand building. Nykaa's expansion into beauty, fashion, lifestyle and B2B commerce has made Nayar one of the prominent figures associated with India's modern consumer and e-commerce industry.
