Early life and education

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was born on 23 March 1953 in Bangalore, in the then Mysore State, India. She studied at Bishop Cotton Girls' High School and later completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Bangalore University in 1973.

Although her academic background was in biological science, Mazumdar-Shaw initially planned a career in brewing. She completed a postgraduate qualification in malting and brewing from the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education in Australia, now associated with Federation University Australia, in 1975. She subsequently worked in the brewing industry before entering biotechnology entrepreneurship.

Her training in fermentation science later became relevant to the early development of Biocon, particularly in the production of industrial enzymes.

Founding Biocon

In 1978, Mazumdar-Shaw founded Biocon in Bengaluru as a biotechnology company. The business initially focused on the production of industrial enzymes using fermentation technology.

Biocon's early operations were established with limited infrastructure and resources. Over time, the company expanded its research and manufacturing capabilities and moved from industrial enzymes into biopharmaceutical research and development.

Mazumdar-Shaw's leadership helped transform Biocon from a small biotechnology venture into a global biopharmaceutical enterprise. Biocon describes her as a pioneer of India's biotechnology industry and credits her with helping establish the country's position in global biotechnology.

Biocon and biotechnology

Under Mazumdar-Shaw's leadership, Biocon expanded its activities from industrial biotechnology into pharmaceuticals, biologics, biosimilars and research services.

The company developed capabilities in areas including diabetes, oncology, immunology and other therapeutic fields. Biocon also established businesses focused on research and development, contract research and biologic medicines.

Biocon's expansion included the creation of Syngene International, a research-services company that became an independent publicly listed company. Mazumdar-Shaw has served in leadership and board roles associated with both Biocon and Syngene.

Biocon later expanded internationally through partnerships, acquisitions and the development of biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. Its businesses have included Biocon Limited, Biocon Biologics and Syngene.
